The benefits of using essential oils in your home

Introducing aromatherapy oils to your family

Who doesn’t love walking through a nicely scented home? It’s so welcoming to come home to at the end of the school or work day. And ultimately, it creates a pleasant physical and emotional feeling among the family. (As opposed to the sickening feeling you get when somebody forgets to take the garbage out…)

While some choose to light fruity, floral, or mocha scented candles, diffusing essential oils (otherwise known as aromatherapy oils) is becoming a popular alternative.

Oils are not only safer because there are no flames involved, they are also 100% pure and don’t contain any additives. Due to their natural nature, they have multiple health benefits when used around the home as well.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are created by extracting and distilling certain plants. This results in an extremely concentrated product with healing qualities.

They are made from the leaves, flowers, stems, seeds, and roots of plants. The plant materials are then placed over boiling water and tiny droplets of oil are collected in the steam. When the steam cools, the oils are collected when they separate from the water.

Due to the concentration level, essential oils often have a more intense scent than the original plant.

How does a diffuser work?

Diffusers work by dispersing essential oils into the air to allow our bodies to inhale and absorb the nutrients. There are a few different options of diffusers, so it’s best to do some research to find the best one for you.

It’s typically recommended to add 3-5 drops of essential oil per 100ml of water.

3 benefits of using essential oils in your home

New to aromatherapy and essential oils? Here are 3 key reasons to introduce them to your family.

1. Create a positive atmosphere

Essential oils have the power to energise or reduce stress. You just need to source the right ones to suit your needs!

Some options to try:

  • Eucalyptus or Grapefruit - To wake up easier in the morning and improve your overall mood.
  • Orange, jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla - To promote feelings of optimism.
  • Rosemary - To improve cognitive brain function.

2. Help you relax and sleep better

Studies have shown aromatherapy can treat psychological disorders, such as stress, depression, and anxiety.

Some options to try:

  • Lavender - To reduce anxiety and aid sleep.
  • Bergamot - To encourage relaxation and lower blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Clary sage - To reduce depression and balance hormone levels.

3. Boost your immune system

Many essential oils have antifungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties which can prevent the development of certain illnesses.

Some options to try:

  • Eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree - To prevent colds by keeping your passageways clear of congestion and bacteria.
  • Cinnamon, eucalyptus, oregano, sage, and frankincense - To boost your immune system.
  • Oregano - To heal infections throughout the body and prevent them from developing into more serious conditions.
