What Victorian gas means for your southern move

March 29, 2022

So, you've decided to move to Victoria or perhaps even Coffee Central aka Melbourne with its wealth of fabulous fashion and charming city alleyways.

Yet as you organise the dozens of moving details, you notice an interesting utility change which is particularly noticeable if this is the first time you've lived in the southern state.

Gas.

Almost every house in the state - 92%, to be precise, according to ABS figures - or 2 million residential households come with mains gas connections, especially for heating power (and rest assured, you need plenty of warmth in this chilly state!)

As a result, Victorians are the biggest gas users in Australia with a 2017 Energy Networks Australia revealing 69% of households' annual energy is resourced from this resource.

That's a lot of gas for a state with nearly 6 million residents so how did Victoria achieve such a large portion of this asset?

Why and wherefore?

While Western Australia produces the majority of Australia's gas, Victoria also enjoys major gas resources which are incredibly close to its capital city.

Victorian gas fans can thank the Bass Strait's Gippsland coast for this energy resource with a joint venture by Esso and BHP discovering the state's first gas "field" there in 1965 and beginning production in 1969.

The strait has now produced over eight trillion cubic feet of natural gas with 23 gas and oil "platforms" in the water.

The Gippsland Basin, as well as the Otway Basin in South Australia, also supply gas to Victoria.

What does this mean for your move?

There are many reasons for and against utilising gas as your household's main energy resource especially when it comes to environmental impacts and billing costs.

This writer for one prefers gas cooktops for their simple and immediate heating and cooling opportunities.

But we're not one for controversy or disagreements at Moving Loop.

While some Victorian houses certainly feature both gas and electricity, if you're considering a southern border move, expect your house to have gas connections in place, especially for heating.

If you wish to switch to entirely electric or to a renewable energy source such as solar panels, expect this change to take time and money.

That being said, this switch can be well worth the effort - and who better to come to ease any switch stressors than Moving Loop?
