How to style your home to suit your personality

June 1, 2021

Decorating your space, your way.

When it comes to styling your home, there are several factors to consider. For example, there’s the building style and layout, your budget, and, most importantly, creating an environment suited and styled to match your unique personality.

Choosing the right style for you will create that calming ‘ahh’ moment every time you walk through the front door.

There's an abundance of styles to choose from. And there’s an endless list of combinations, from contemporary to traditional, Hamptons to minimalist, boho, or transitional - just to name a few. Each draws inspiration from different fashions, cultures, and eras.

But how do you know which style is best suited to your personality?

We’ve outlined some ways to incorporate your personality and lifestyle into the interior design of your home.

Take a quiz

If you aren’t sure where to start and have no idea which design style reflects your tastes, start by taking a quiz. The result can act as a guide to define your style.

We like the Home Style Quiz by Emily Henderson. But there are many other quizzes out there to assist with determining your style.

Once you’ve determined your style, you’ll be well-equipped to confidently make those bigger furniture purchases. And tie in other on-point elements to complement the look.

What’s your home’s structural style?

Now you have some idea of your style, consider the existing structural style of your house. For example, if you have raw-wood accent beams, it might inspire a more rustic farmhouse design. Whereas if you have an ultra-modern house with crisp geometric lines and subtle colour tones, like white and grey, then a boho interior may look out of place.

However, don’t let this limit you. If you love Bohemian styling and own a modern, sleek, minimalist style home, consider paring it back with boho inspired wall hangings and rugs, rather than macramé hangings and rattan furniture.

Mix styles

Few people have singular passions, tastes, or styles - so your home doesn’t need to be limited by just one look either. The beauty of knowing your style means you can challenge it a little and add another dimension to your interior design.

Check out Emily Henderson’s design wheel, which shows the different styles that pair best.

If you need further inspiration, create a vision board. You can make an old school board by gathering paint cards and fabric swatches, or save photos of rooms on Pinterest. Another option is to gather ideas from display homes, so you can visually see how they decorate a particular space.

Show who you are

Do you love to travel and have collectables from each location? Or are you a lover of fine art and have numerous artworks from different artists, eras, styles and colour palettes in your home?

Whatever gives you joy, embrace it. Add it to your home with pride and in a visually appealing way. Don’t worry if it doesn’t fit into the most recent trends. Remember, trends come and go, but your uniqueness is what people love about you. So, allow ‘you’ to be present in your styling and never apologise for it.

Suit your lifestyle

If you have a large family, young kids, or pets, an elegant space with breakable antique vases and sculptures may not be the best choice (for now). Consider a locked cabinet with some antique collectables instead. If you have a small budget, stay within it with clever DIY options.

Creating beautiful home interiors can be self-expressive and fun. Find out what styles best suit your personality, make it work for your lifestyle and space, and enjoy coming home to a space perfectly designed for you.
