The Wealthy Aussie Suburbs That Celebrities Call Home

February 22, 2024

Celebrities are not really that different to us when they buy a new home. Like us, their priorities include value for money, good schools, and accessible local amenities. But they also have some specific requirements, which is why they buy in certain pockets of Australia.

Privacy is the no.1 priority for most celebrities

Privacy and security top their list of search criteria, but they also require easy access to airports and more land to accommodate staff, car collections, swimming pools, tennis courts, guest houses and even soccer pitches! Furthermore, since Australia offers a wide range of diverse locations for film shoots, that is another consideration.

Understandably, different cultures congregate in certain suburbs and celebrities are no different

With the pressure of modern media, it is understandable that celebrities search for areas that offer a guaranteed level of exclusivity. For obvious reasons. Several minor celebrities live in our “hood” - writers and Australian TV actors mainly – and although I’m no stalker, it's impossible not to get a bit excited when you spot one in the local supermarket.

Fortunately, Australia has a smorgasbord of stunning suburbs and areas that offer them the security and geographical locations that make it easier to evade the media.

The Wealthy Aussie Suburbs
Wealthy Aussie suburbs are often chosen by celebrities for their exclusivity, privacy, and refuge from media attention.

There are few cities around the world where you can surf or take a dip during your lunch break

So where are they?

Well, according to our research, most of them are located in or around our major cities for the logistical reasons we mentioned above, although there are certain exceptions as you'll see below:

  1. Sydney is the biggest drawcard for celebrities in NSW. What’s not to love about the city’s stunning landscape, history, iconic harbour, world-class beaches and fine dining options? There are few cities around the world that offer the chance to swim or surf during your lunch break, but Sydney also offers a range of top-notch schools that appeal to celebrity's with young families. The city's wealthiest suburbs include Mosman in the Lower North Shore,  Double Bay, VaucluseAustralia’s richest suburb according to Soho - and Bondi in the Eastern Suburbs, and finally, Palm Beach at the top end of the Northern Beaches - once home to George Michael. Of course, no NSW list would be complete without a mention of the celebrity hotspots out of Sydney, such as Bellingen, near Coffs Harbour whose stunning national parks inspire musos and other creatives, and Byron Bay, which is now more famous for the spiritual, healthy lifestyle promoted by Olivia Newton-John and the presence of a certain local superhero.
  2. Toorak, Brighton, South Yarra, and St Kilda are the most prized celebrity suburbs in Victoria. Situated in and around Melbourne - the Australian city most renowned for its coffee culture (by Melburnians!) - these suburbs may not offer Sydney's climate or beaches, but they make up for them with their culture, quirky bars, fine dining and live entertainment. However, celebrities can be a fickle bunch of individuals, so who knows if Bendigoalready on Listing Loop’s radar and recently voted the top town in Australia by Wotif – will take off as a new celebrity hotspot. For high living out of the city, other areas where celebrities have splashed their cash include the stunning Mornington Peninsula where Hugh Jackman has a property and any one of the quaint towns situated along the Great Ocean Road such as Lorne, where TV chef Shannon Bennett owned a home.
  3. It’s difficult to look past the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and the town of Noosa in Queensland, the jewel in the state's crown with its cosmopolitan range of boutiques and restaurants, stunning main beach and national park. It has become a  playground for the wealthy and Kevin Rudd, Gabriel Macht (of Suits fame), Lleyton and Bec Hewitt, and TV presenter Karl Stefanovic have all owned property in this stunning part of Australia. Further north, Rip Curl co-founder Doug “Claw” Warbrick owns a large site overlooking the surf break at Agnes Water in the Gladstone and surfing legend Mick Fanning has a property on the Gold Coast. The Whitsundays, situated in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, have also had their fair share of famous property owners, including George Harrison who owned a home on Hamilton Island.
  4. The suburbs that carry the biggest price tags in South Australia are Toorak Gardens, Unley Park, North Adelaide and Prospect. South Australia has the largest outback mountain range, the infamous wine regions of the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale, the invention of shark cage diving to its name, and some world-class food experiences. Most of its wealthier suburbs are situated around Adelaide, a city that was ranked in 2021 as one of the top in the world for liveability and was once home to Mel Gibson.
  5. We know that Perth, the epicentre of Western Australia, is currently booming. Hence it's no surprise that it boasts several exclusive suburbs. Leafy Dalkeith - described by Domain as “A little slice of Paris” - has a classy village of luxury, boutique stores, trendy cafes and upmarket restaurants that are certain to impress. But according to travel site Soho, the richest area in WA is the Western Australian Golden Triangle, which includes Dalkeith, Cottesloe (with its infamous beach), Peppermint Grove – where the median house price sits at almost $6 million – and Mosman Park.
