How can I make a saving on my energy bills more effectively?

May 2, 2022

Receiving an energy bill is never nice.

But here's some good news for you: that same bill may put you in line for a fantastic rebate or concession.

Yes, you read that right.

Depending on your energy provider, where you live, and your age, health and income, you may not have to splash out your cash on electricity and gas, thereby giving you some great savings (or not, if you choose to use that extra cash on a coffee catch up or retail spree).

Read on to find out more.

How do I find out if I can get a concession or rebate?

Simple - just ask your energy provider and while you're at it, don't be ashamed or too proud to ask for this help!

Different states offer different savings in this way too so if you've just moved interstate, or you're about to do so, check with your energy provider as to how they can assist you in your new house.

For example, in Queensland, eligible seniors, war veterans, low-income households and asylum seekers can receive up to $340 annually in electricity and gas rebates.

These savings may include not just those living in their own homes but those living in caravan parks, boarding houses, nursing homes and retirement villages.

Some people with severe medical conditions may also be eligible for concessions and rebates.

In another example, the long grey chilly days of Victorian winters may improve for some people with the state government now offering winter gas concessions for eligible seniors, war veterans and those on a low income.

Available between May 1 (yes, northerners, that's when the cold starts down south of the border!) and October 31, these Victorians can enjoy a saving of 17.5% in gas usage and service costs.

Not bad, right?

I can get a concession or rebate. Where are my savings?

Firstly, don't expect a nice chunk of extra cash to appear in your bank account.

That's not how energy concessions and rebates work.

But chin up and never fear - you are still receiving some great savings!

The answer lies on your bill's second or third page, amidst all that boring fine print you usually ignore.

So before you contact your energy provider in a rage, double-check your bill.

Savings on both electricity and gas bills are most often in the usage and service calculations section, and detailed as "credit" or "CR".

Depending on where you live, this credit may be fully spelt out as "NSW Gvt Household Rebate" or similar.

Yes, permission to get excited - or at least quite pleased - when you see this figure!
